STOP LOGGING Print E-mail
Every time, when Ricardus is visiting the fields to collect plants or surveying the mountains and countryside and he spots the logging of some forest for firewood or charcoal production, he immediately embarks on a mission to halt the logging. He interrupts his work and move speedily to the nearest police station to inform them and set a complaint, and then he starts a series of contacts first reaching the Ministry of Agriculture, then local authorities, press and media, and any possible source or figure to pressure them to stop the massacre in the Lebanese forests. When he is not in the field, Ricardus would still be contacted by members and nature lovers to be informed of logging activities; relentlessly, he moves to action.

The forests of Lebanon are its precious and vital resource. Ricardus would not relax until some deterring action had been undertaken.

Beside the fields, Ricardus addressed decision makers, prominent figures, authorities, and ministries lobbying for the enforcement of extant laws and for the exercising of control on leasing wood extraction from forests and subsequent field monitoring. Ricardus also created pressure groups to withdraw or inactivate licenses for thinning of important forests that are of particular significance. He also proposed and promoted the passing of new decrees to effect protection and banning of logging of types of trees or sites, etc.

Through his perseverance and personal initiative and the FON, Ricardus has saved thousands of hectares of forests from disappearing, and in turn, has saved all their inhabitants of birds, insects, flowers and the natural ecosystem they compose, sometimes for good and sometimes for a temporary period until another logging wave invades. Ricardus is the ever-watching eye over the natural assets of Lebanon. Through the 70’s to the 90’s, when the governmental mechanism was weak or inactive, Ricardus was the guarding voice and main, if not the sole, defender of those assets. He acts industriously and restlessly, because the cause is divine.
